It was a hard-fought 2-1 win over Trinity on Saturday, September 17 at the Workers Arena.
The match went right down to the wire and looked like going to a penalty shootout until Ava Ashburner scored her first goal of the season to break the deadlock.
There has been very little separating these two teams all season, so it was no surprise that it was such a close, exciting game.
The grand final berth is fitting reward for the Stags team, which is the youngest team in the competition. Most of the kids turned 12 in the past six to eight weeks. They have been training hard since March and have improved their skills immensely in that time.
They face Crookwell in what should be a close and entertaining game. These two teams have had some terrific matches and are evenly matched.
The U13 Stags vs Crookwell grand final is 8.30am at the Workers Arena Saturday, September 24.
The 2016 season kicked off way back on the April 2 with seven teams entered in the U13 age division. At the conclusion of the third round the competition was split into two divisions so that all the kids were given an opportunity to keep playing and take part in a finals series.
So here we are six months later with Stags and Crookwell playing for the Division 2 title, while Workers and Marulan will face off in the Division 1 decider.
As with most sports, there have been some ups and downs during the year, and the STFA is no exception but the under 13 age group has managed to avoid any controversy due to a couple of very important factors.
Firstly, the kids all get along well together no matter what colour strip they may be wearing and it is fantastic to see the camaraderie and sportsmanship on display week in week out.
Secondly, the coaches of every team are all there for the right reason, which is to mentor the children, not only in the skills of the game but most importantly to respect each other, their opposition and the match officials.
This is why it has made a long season so enjoyable.
Grand final day will kick off at the Workers Arena at 8.30am on Saturday with the Stags v Crookwell match and will go right through to the All Age Men’s decider that will kick off at 7pm. We wish all team participating the best of luck.
