The Monday Painters Group caters for people who want to learn more about the craft – not so much any style but the technique of painting, and aspects such as perspective, tone, colour and theory.
- Stavros Papantoniou
The paintings in the exhibition are varied in subject, complexity and tone. It features an impressive array of landscapes and portraits by the artists: Pauline Dickson, Karen Drummond, Don Elder, Susan Harris, Maggie McFadyen, Linda Mawbey, Patricia Mueller, Steve Nichols and Stavros Papantoniou.
The ‘Monday Painters Group’ are painters of varying levels of experience who have been learning from award-winning painter Stavros Papantoniou, who moved to Goulburn two years ago.
Mr Papantoniou said he works with people of all different levels and stages in their painting.
“The Monday Painters Group started in February this year over two sessions a day. It started with eight people and has been growing steadily,” Mr Papantoniou said.
“It is growing more and will be getting more next year. The Monday Painters Group caters for people who want to learn more about the craft – not so much any style but the technique of painting, and aspects such as perspective, tone, colour and theory.”
“I try and infuse confidence in people to help themselves so when they are confronted with that blank canvas they can get right into it.
“I am very ‘hands on’ in my teaching. I deal with all levels in the class – some are more advanced than others. I just respond to what they are painting.”
Mr Papantoniou said the group’s first exhibition reflected not only the different levels of competence, but the different preoccupations of the group.
He is also teaching the Art After Dark, Life Drawing class at the Goulburn Regional Art Gallery for two weeks on December 9 and 16. Contact that gallery on 4823 4492 for more information about this.
