The 23-year-old mother of three was hanged for killing her husband with a carving knife in 1855 after hearing he had gambled away their property and was with a “fancy woman.”
The case caused public uproar at the time, and today her story continues to grip the fascination and imagination of anyone who comes across it.
As part of the Convicts, Crime and Correction: Goulburn’s judicial and criminal history in the 19th and early 20th century, St Clair Villa Museum and Archives will hold an exclusive public talk on the complex narrative that is Ms Brownlow’s legend.
Goulburn Post journalist David Cole, who wrote The Ballad of Mary Ann Brownlow with the late John Spicer, will speak at the event along with actress Erin Williams and museums officer Claire Baddeley.
The talk will be held at St Claire Museum this Saturday, February 18, at 2pm.
