The Roads and Maritime Service started the work on Wednesday on Forbes Street and Bungonia Road. It will continue over the next two weeks and involve some lane closures and alternating traffic.
A spokesman said the investigations would “help inform” the bridge replacement.
“Roads and Maritime Services is continuing to work with Goulburn Mulwaree Council on the preferred design option for the replacement bridge and new approaches,” he said.
“RMS is also continuing to work with the Office of Environment and Heritage (OEH) to progress the necessary planning and environmental approval required to build the new bridge.”
Access between Bungonia Road and Forbes Street was retained following a volley of public submissions in June, 2014. Approaches to the new bridge and new intersection of Forbes Street and Bungonia Road will also be realigned.
“The community will be updated on the outcome of the NSW Heritage Council assessment of the preferred design once it is determined, which is expected in coming months,” the spokesman said.
Demolition is expected to begin in late 2017. Work on the new bridge will start in early 2018, with completion in 2019. The timeframes are dependent on approvals.
