NSW Police Commissioner Mick Fuller appointed Mr Worboys along with Jeff Loy, the Deputy Commissioner Metropolitan Field Operations, in Sydney on Thursday morning.
These new and dedicated positions by NSW Police were created in a bid for more focused front line work and crime prevention across the state.
“The world we live in has evolved and we need to adapt to the changing needs of the community,” Mr Fuller said.
“Mr Worboys has over 34 years policing experience across country and metropolitan NSW in Traffic and Highway Patrol; Local Area Commander at Goulburn, Monaro, Wollongong and Liverpool, and most recently as Commander, Southern Region,” adding regional communities face different challenges and “no longer benefit” from a one-size-fits-all approach.
Mr Worboys became Hume’s Local Area Commander in Goulburn in 2010 and has most recently held the title of Southern Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner.
He joined the NSW Police Force as a junior trainee in 1981, attested the next year and was stationed in Blacktown. He was soon promoted to Constable and served in the Traffic Branch. He later worked in Lismore and Goulburn, where he became Superintendent.
‘Crime, Community and Our People’ has been his ethos while on the force, leading community engagement programs.
He was awarded the National Police Service Medal in 2014, National Medal in 1997 and the NSW Police Medal in 2003. He also oversaw ‘Operation Herculean’, which targeted heavy vehicles along the Hume Highway. He is often seen helping the Goulburn Workers Bulldogs rugby league football club during local games.
