Just a stone’s throw away, the quaint little town of Crookwell is the perfect distance for a day trip from Goulburn. Only 30 minutes up the road by car, Crookwell is well worth the visit, particularly at this time of the year. As the blossoms begin to bloom and the days get longer, Crookwell comes alive.
The Mary Gilmore Weekend, held in October each year, brings scores of visitors to the town to enjoy a packed program including art exhibitions, poetry and musical performances and historical displays. The Mary Gilmore Weekend celebrates the life and work of prominent Australian socialist, poet and journalist Dame Mary Gilmore, who was born at Roslyn, near Crookwell.
Crookwell is an ideal base for exploring all the region has to offer. Some of the top things to do there include:
GO ON AN OUTDOOR ADVENTURE
Water sports at Grabine, driving tours, trout fishing or fossick for gold and gemstones. Southern Tablelands Cycling has many great options for short or long bike rides with a particularly popular route starting in Crookwell and snaking 42.7km to Taralga through the beautiful Mt Rae forest. Not for the faint hearted, more information, including maps and directions, can be found at www.southerntablelandscycling.com
WATCH AND LEARN
Watch artisans plying their craft producing fine woollen socks, using old style machines, at the Lindner family Crookwell factory. Visitors can take a tour (see lindersocks.com.au for more information). You can also watch local thespians tread the boards from Friday October, 27 to Saturday, November 4 when the Crookwell Amateur Dramatic Society (CADS) stages its annual production. This year, the group presents the Outback Debutante Ball. A show not to be missed!
EXPERIENCE FARM LIFE WITH A DIFFERENCE
Get up close with baby alpacas or explore amazing lavender gardens. The region offers a diversity of on-farm experiences including ornamental gardens, commercial lavender gardens, fruit orchards, cold climate vineyards, olive groves and alpacas. Some are open seasonally whilst others are all year round to allow you to experience the various stages of production. For the latest openings, contact the Visitor Information Centre on 4832 1988.
