With a show and shine of the featured Legend Cars, Wingless Sprints and Vintage Sprint Cars supported by other custom built, and restored road and race cars in Montague St on Saturday morning it was a full day of motorsports entertainment.
Before the race meeting there was a concert at the Goulburn Speedway, which featured Country singer Adam Brand and was supported by Jamie Agius and his band along with the Bensley brothers and several young dance troupes from Goulburn and the Highlands.
Brand had driven his #34 Legend Car in parade out to the Goulburn Recreation Area but was unable to race.
“I was being a bit silly on my motorbike,” he told the concert audience. “I off and broke a couple of ribs.”
“I was really looking forward to competing but I cannot risk making things worse.”
He was obviously still in some degree of pain as he performed a selection of new and his old songs on the temporary stage. He stayed around after the show to watch the racing and caught up with some of his Legend Car racing friends.
Thirty-five cars had nominated to participate in the NSW Championship event but a couple of drivers withdrew including Brand, with good reason.
This included development drivers, who were new to the 5/8th replica fibreglass bodied, Yamaha 1200/1255cc powered, machines. Among those was Goulburn’s Damien McAlister who was more used to driving a V6 Commodore. McAlister managed to achieve a third place in the development class after leading the feature race for a considerable period.
There were plenty of spills and crashes in the main but the main event. One casualty was Australian recently awarded USA Champion Glenn Arnold from Shoalhaven Heads. Something broke on the front end of his car as he was charging through the field and he speared across the back straight causing a several car pile-up.
The winner Glenn Mitchell from Thirlmere in #41N managed to avoid much of the carnage despite lapping a couple of slower Legends. Second was Liam Heaton #89A of Canberra and third Jake Griffin #44N of Mudgee.
In the Wingless Sprints Peter Granger avioded much of the carnage but finished back in the field although he managed to gain several positions on where he started.
