They walked along Auburn Street and into Belmore Park, where they were greeted by songs from a choir of the Goulburn Regional Conservatorium.
Mission Australia south-eastern NSW manager Daniel Strickland welcomed the crowd, saying the day was all about preventing men’s violence towards women.
“Terrible statistics this year alone confirm that nation wide 43 women have lost their lives to domestic violence,” Mr Strickland said.
Hume LAC acting Superintendent Andrew Koutsoufis then spoke, making a call out to all fathers to ensure their daughters never experienced domestic violence.
“The choir sang - You’ll Never walk Alone - and as police, I want to reassure the community that with us here you will never be alone if you are the victim of this heinous crime of domestic violence,” Superintendent Koutsoufis said.
“About two year’s ago, I became the father of a daughter and when I look at her I think there will never be any excuse to hurt my girl or any excuse to hurt any girl.
“I am also the father of three boys and it is up to me to be the role model for those boys and help them understand it will never be ok for them to disrespect women.
“My call out is to all fathers to be those role models that reinforce this message – and also to teachers and coaches of sporting teams. You need to act to show that disrespect towards women is not acceptable.
“Here in Hume, we have some of the highest legal action rates against domestic violence, which means that if you record domestic violence to us we are committed to take action.
“November 25 sees the launch of the national register for domestic violence offenders, so there is nowhere to hide for these offenders anymore.”
White Ribbon Day is acknowledged nationally on November 25, but the march occurred in Goulburn on Friday, November 24.
