She must like the place because she is returning to play again at the Goulburn Club this Friday, March 16.
Vriend is well known for her literary writing style, which reveals the influence of songwriters such as Paul Simon, Leonard Cohen, Bob Dylan and Cat Stevens.
She combines this with a booming voice, which has been compared to Dolly Parton and Aretha Franklin.
Vriend confirmed she loved playing in Goulburn.
“I have played at the Goulburn Club before and I loved it there,” she said.
She hails from Edmonton, an area of prairies and snow and cold and long winters – so maybe that is the similarity?
Vriend has played a lot as a solo artist, and also played at last year’s Australian Blues Music Festival as part of the Rooster Davis Group.
“I played solo for years and while I love the solo experience the groove that a band brings to RnB is so much more,” she said.
She says her influences as a singer include Sam Cooke and Marvin Gaye and she has her own unique blend of raw emotion and groove.
Ann Vriend is playing from 7.30pm. Tickets cost $20 and are available at the door.
The fun continues at the Goulburn Club on saturday, March 17, with the Irish band – Arainn Mhor, who are playing from 7.30 to 11.30pm.
The band derives their name from an island off the west coast of County Donegal in Ulster, Ireland.
Jock McLean from the Goulburn Club (and also a member of this band) said it would be a great way to celebrate St Patrick’s Day.
“Celebrate St Paddy’s day with all the Celtic songs and dance tunes played by our band, Arainn Mhor,” Mr McLean said.
“You can sing, dance and drink the night away with true Irish merriment.”
In general, Friday Nights are the entertainment nights at the Goulburn Club, with a variety of local and touring performers entertaining patrons.
