Children swarmed Victoria Park on Saturday morning for the opening of the highly anticipated Adventure Playground.
The formal proceedings, which included speeches from Goulburn Mulwaree council (GMC) mayor Bob Kirk and general manager Warwick Bennett, MP Pru Goward and MP Angus Taylor, was almost drowned out by the children.
Sprinting between swings, leaping into the flying fox, building in the sand box and climbing up the spider’s web – all with parents in tow.
The $1.5 million project was tabled about four years ago, driven primarily by Robert Hughes of the GMC Parks and Gardens department.
A working party was soon formed, gaining significant financial support from both the state and federal government, including local organisations such as Goulburn Convoy for Kids.
“Here we are after all the planing and quoting... we got to this point,” Cr Kirk said.
“It’s a marvelous addition to our offerings in Goulburn and it will be well received.”
The adventure playground is part of a larger upgrade to Victoria Park.
Cr Kirk said CCTV and increased lighting is also set to be rolled out in the future.
“We will rely on the good will of the community and their good sense to preserve what we have in the manner that it is in,” he said in response to questions about the security of the site.
The park was built by Landform Gardens, led by project manager Paul Jones.
