It was part of a state-wide movement by Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW), as they opened hundreds of fire stations, giving communities a chance to check out the fire trucks, stations and meet their local firefighters.
There were a range of free activities and educational experiences for everyone. The firefighters offered advice on installing or replacing smoke alarms and how to best prepare a home fire escape plan in the lead-up to winter.
Young children received a Brigade Kids activity booklet and got to dress up as firefighters.
FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said the community had an opportunity to learn more about the vital work carried out by firefighters.
“Our firefighters are among the most highly trained in the world and have a very wide range of capabilities,” he said. “The job involves much more than firefighting whether it is across the state, or country, even deployments overseas and supporting other emergency services. From chemical spills, car accidents and natural disasters to prevention education and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and help anyone, anywhere, anytime.”
Goulburn FRNSW is currently advertising for potential new retained firefighters and people who are interested in being active in this vital service can see the Fire & Rescue NSW Station 305 Goulburn Facebook page to view the details.
