For 85-year-old Carolyn Tooth, age is no barrier when it comes to breeding a successful Limousin herd.
At a time of life when many people are content to enjoy the benefits of retirement, she continued her work – breeding cattle and participating in local and national shows – with her well known Limousin herd. Now past her 85th birthday, Mrs Tooth has decided to offer up her longstanding breeding legacy at an on-property complete dispersal sale on June 2.
Longreach Limousins will bow out of the cattle industry on Mrs Tooth’s decision to retire. It’s an opportunity to purchase bloodlines from a quality genetic pool.
She and late husband, Bill, moved to the 1836 heritage listed sandstone Brayton property in 1980 and started the stud later that decade.
“It was a passion and a dream of mine and my late husband Bill Tooth to create a herd with the desirable Limousin attributes that would ensure world’s best practice at my farm,” Mrs Tooth said.
Consultation with industry experts and travel to International Limousin Congresses – in Italy, France, Denmark and Ireland – guided her approach to her precious Limousin herd.
“Our aim has been to breed French Limousin muscle and depth into our cattle without the extreme tendencies, so we have very carefully selected and combined the very best of European, Canadian and American stock,” Mrs Tooth said.
She is regarded as a mentor and adviser in the industry. Determined to contribute to the Australian Limousin industry, she has supported young cattle enthusiasts at local and annual youth camps. Longreach has also hosted several field days. The stud has recorded continued success in the show ring.
“My work in the cattle industry has provided everlasting friendships and a life of joy and unforgettable experiences,” she said.
- The sale starts at 2pm. The property is located at 100 Bulls Pit Road, Brayton.
