It was for the MBA Southern Region Building Awards Best Commercial Refurbishment over $500,000.
It was awarded for their recent renovations of the Goulburn Workers Club.
MP Hogan Homes and Constructions also picked up an award at the awards, which were held at the Ulladulla Civic Centre recently.
“It was a huge effort by Colin and his team to keep the existing Workers Club operating with the huge logistic and security issues during trading hours evident in re-modelling,” the judges said of the work by Jewell Builders.
“The project showed all the signs of a well-organised team with the complex array of materials and finishes that were used to good effect.”
Mr Jewell said the project was completed within 12 weeks while the club remained fully operational.
“Jewell Builders and subcontractors worked outside normal working hours in numerous areas to eliminate disruption to the operation of the club, a major financial benefit to the club,” Mr Jewell said.
“Jewell Builders’ work health and safety procedures, implemented on site, allowed the club to be fully operational at all times during the project.
“As is the case with most renovations/refurbishments, unforeseen issues were encountered during the construction.”
Jewell Builders in consultation with the client and architect remedied the issues and kept within the original construction program.
The end result was very rewarding to the client, architect and contractors alike.
“The refurbishment design by Studio Nine Architects was to provide a more modern, lighter, brighter & functional lounge & restaurant areas,” Mr Jewell said.
“The judges said there was a good use of different building materials throughout the renovation.
“Goulburn Workers Club staff played a significant part in completing this project by working well with Jewell Builders during the construction period.”
He made special mention to Jewell Builders staff, David Trankulov (Site Foreman) and Reg O’Rourke (carpenter) for bringing the project together with a high standard of finishes, and the subcontractors on site, who worked to the construction program time lines and also achieved a high level of finish in the process.
The sub-contractors on the job were: Webster & McPherson Electrical, Goulburn Engineering, Austral Coatings, D & L Building & Tiling, Jeanette Smith Fabrics, Peter Porter Motor Trimming & Upholstery, Goulburn Carpet Court, Brooker Industries, A Clarke Floor Sanding & Polishing and Guymer’s Glass Service.
Goulburn Worker CEO Brett Gorham said it was a “fantastic job.”
“It was fantastic job. It is a great testament to the local tradespeople that they won this award,” Mr Gorham said.
“It has lightened up the feel of the club and given our members a different look.”
Goulburn firm, MP Hogan Homes and Constructions, also picked up an award for the best contract home between $700,000 and $800,000 for a project in Sanctuary Drive.
The judges said an excellent entry submission demonstrated Mitchell and Lauren Hogan’s building talents.
“Exterior architectural features of this home are striking with the siting to surrounding landscape, vertical linear cladding, matrix panels and corrugated colorbond frontage, all blending well in their texture patterns,” the judges said.
“The bathrooms and kitchen were of a high standard. Zero floor trips to highly polished concrete floor with glass chips is a feature at the main entry.”
The nomination was pitched against other entries from throughout the southern region.
The judges considered different types of building systems employed, the site and degree of difficulty.
The home employed a ready wall system with timber frame upstairs, hebel wall panels, engineered timber cladding and solar efficiency.
Mr Hogan started as a builder with his father in 2003 but has been running his own business for the past eight years.
His family attended the June 16 ceremony at Ulladulla Civic Centre, along with some 300 other people.
“He’s rapt with the award,” Mitch’s father, Dennis said.
“We booked a table of eight and didn’t know the results until the night.”
