Goulburn 'yarn bombing' proves a hit

The city’s public art turned heads last month, donned in colourful woolens to guard against the cold and to promote an annual exhibition.

The “yarn bombing” exercise by Goulburn’s Gallery on Track has proved so popular that members have pledged a similar stunt next year.

Members took to Auburn Street in June to dress the art works, including bronze dogs and the sculpture in front of Belmore Park. It was aimed at promoting their annual exhibition, Wonders of Wool, displaying a range of both wearable and decorative items created by members.

As part of the exhibition, Gallery on Track also hosted a Worldwide Knit in Public event with a pleasing response.

Member Carolyn Greig was delighted with the engagement by the wider community.

“We had a number of members and visitors come along and enjoy getting together to chat and knit (or crochet) on Worldwide Knit in Public Day,” she said.

“The feedback from the community about the yarn bombing was also fantastic with many positive comments both while the installation was occurring and throughout June.

“I had seen examples of yarn bombing and thought it was a great way to create awareness about Gallery on Track and our June Wool exhibition, as well as bringing some colour and fun to the City during winter. We will be doing it again next year and are already thinking about the different possibilities.”

Goulburn Mulwaree Council thought it was a pretty good idea too.

“Council continues to invest into public art as we see it as important for a thriving community,” Mayor Bob Kirk said.

“It was great to see this art in a different style after being yarn bombed and we look forward to this occurring each year in June!”

Gallery on Track is a volunteer run facility which allows its members to display and offer for sale their many varied handmade creations. It is located at 2 Blackshaw Road and hosts workshops and exhibitions throughout the year. For more information visit www.galleryontrack.org or look for Gallery on Track on Facebook.
