The old Goulburn City Council chambers at the rear of the McDermott Centre will be transformed into a foyer, box office and area for small functions under plans for the new $12.1 million performing arts venue. The main theatre will be built behind.

Councillors decided at their recent meeting to grant naming rights for the space to Veolia Environmental Services. The company, under its Veolia Mulwaree Trust, earlier granted $2m for the project. The money will be paid in four equal instalments over 2018/19.

After considerable discussion, councillors decided to offer the name ‘the Veolia Room’ to the company. Recognition is part of the grant terms. General manager Warwick Bennett said discussions had occurred over 12 months.

Cr Alf Walker objected to the the initial suggestion it be named the ‘Veolia Theatrette.’ 

“Naming it the theatrette would be quite confusing given its function,” he said.

Cr Peter Walker argued the council was acting too soon.

“I don’t like the idea of naming something when we’re not there yet,” he said, referring to the fact construction tenders had only just been called.

“I just think we’re putting the cart before the horse.”

Cr Walker said tender prices could come back above expectations, necessitating a redesign.

Tenders for construction on close on October 2. Architects Brewster Hjorth have designed the building. Meantime, general manager Warwick Bennett said the council had received more grant funding than expected, reducing the loans needed.
