The event is being held by the YMCA in partnership with Skate Australia and the Goulburn Mulwaree Council.
It is the first event of this level for the Southern Highlands region, and YMCA National Events and Program Manager, Nick Buskens, said he expected a strong turnout from both competitors and spectators.
“Goulburn has invested in a great facility. That’s the first tick, so credit to Goulburn Mulwaree Council,” Buskens said.
“It’s our very first crack, [we’re] super keen, and so far I’ve had a lot of interest in people coming down from Sydney and ACT.”
As opposed to many sporting events, this weekend’s competition is an open invitation to all interested skaters in the region, so they are free to turn up and enter on the day.
The competition will take place at the Goulburn Skate Park this weekend, across Saturday, December 1 and Sunday, December 2.
This event makes up one part of the YMCA’s national pathway program that visits skate parks in Queensland, Victoria, South Australia, Tasmania, Northern Territory, Western Australia and New South Wales.
Karen Doyle, the president of Australia’s peak body - Skate Australia - says, with the addition of skateboarding to the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games, that “the series presents as a great opportunity for young skateboard enthusiasts to harness their skill base and progress through a structured national pathway.”
“In addition to the pathway, the series presents opportunities for young people to gain practical training in sports administration and event management.”
With a growing network of more than 6,000 participants, this series is the biggest and most established Skate Park-related series in Australia.
According to Buskens, the programs are “stepping stones for Australia’s next skateboarding champions and Olympians.”
“Skateboarding is finally getting the recognition it deserves, as a highly skilled and popular sport. The young people who come through are talented, motivated and going places,” she said.
