When Sarah Baines walked into Pru Goward's office, for what she thought was a business meeting, the last thing she expected was to receive the Goulburn Woman of the Year award.
Ms Baines is a financial counsellor for Money Care as part of the Salvation Army.
Through her job, Ms Baines helps people from Goulburn, Crookwell, Gunning and surrounds with bills, budgets and repossession.
The mother of four has waived $280,000 for clients in the last three months.
"It's pretty good to be able to fight for my clients," Ms Baines said.
Often, people who come to Ms Baines live with mental health crises and depression, due to the stress of creditors hassling them.
"I'm a fighter and I will fight for their rights and cut out stress," Ms Baines said.
Ms Baines was nominated for the NSW Woman of the Year award by retiring member for Goulburn, Pru Goward.
"I was pretty pumped to be nominated," Ms Baines said.
While she didn't win the NSW award, she took out Woman of the Year for Goward's electorate.
Later, Ms Baines attended the NSW awards breakfast in Sydney with her husband.
Ms Baines started her current position in 2011 and has helped countless people over the past eight years.
"It's so good to have this service for the community," she said.
"I love helping people."
