The matter is listed for discussion at Tuesday night's council meeting. Staff have recommended that three parcels of land be reclassified as operational, enabling their sale to raise money for projects. One of these is half of Albert Street park, comprising 850 square metres on the southern side.
The proposal has sparked heated community objection, including at an April public hearing into all land reclassifications. Residents argued the park was a valuable recreational facility in the area and selling it for residential use would make little difference to council coffers. Eleven people spoke against it and another four lodged written submissions.
Councillors will consider a report on the public hearing inquiry on Tuesday.
Cr Walker told The Post he's be speaking against the Albert Street park plan.
"I think it should stay as a park," he said.
"It's a park in a good area and I'd like to see it remain as such."
He said he had spoken to several people about the issue. Cr Walker also attended the April hearing along with Mayor Bob Kirk and Crs Carol James, Leah Ferrara and Denzil Sturgiss.
Under an earlier resolution, part of the sale proceeds would fund a playground upgrade in the park.
Cr Walker said if he won support for his motion, there was no money in the budget to fund this work.
"If the community don't want it sold, they can't have it both ways. They have to accept that it may not be upgraded in the immediate future," he said.
The Deputy Mayor does not oppose two other land reclassifications - a three hectare block at at 59-61 Hovell Street and a small lot at 20 Hercules Street. Staff recommended private treaty negotiations with a neighbour for the Hercules Street land as they had previously expressed interest. The person had maintained the block for decades and was fenced off as part of his land, a report stated.
