The state and national branches of the RSPCA provide absolutely essential services for animals, be they pets, livestock or natives.
They continually rescue and receive animals and then provide care for them. They've been able to find more and more forever-homes for these animals each year too. And they hold people accountable for their actions by investigating cruelty and pursuing prosecution of the offenders.
As an example, Friday October 11 was Vet Nurse Day and RSPCA NSW issued a statement which included "a snapshot of what our vet nurses have collectively achieved this year". It said:
- They spent 42,132 minutes (or almost a solid month) on dental procedures
- 7,356 animals were de-sexed
- And 3,900 litres (or 35 bathtubs) of intravenous fluids were administered for fluid therapy
The RSPCA is a Registered Charity, so any donation over $2 is tax-deductable.
As seen in the RSPCA NSW annual report for 2018-19, a surprising amount of the money raised goes directly to the animals, with the remainder used for other services that include pursuing reports of cruelty offences (they investigated 15,673 cases in those 12 months), and ensuring the organisation's continued capacity to help by conducting various fundraising activities.
In their pre-audit figures, the report said that 73 cents from every dollar went directly to the animals' needs, 13 cents was used for all sorts of organisational costs, and the remaining 14 cents went back into fundraising which is how they are able to raise over $30 million per year.
There are all sorts of ways you can donate too.
It can be a one-off amount, a regular monthly thing, given in someone's memory, including the RSPCA or a state branch in your will, playing host when they have a fundraising event or simply doing your own fundraiser any time of year, or attracting donations when you run in events like the Sydney Running Festival.
Information related to all of these is on the website rspcansw.org.au/donate.
RSPCA NSW also publish information about what various amounts of money can help achieve. They say:
- $42.00 could provide one week of antibiotics for an animal recovering from surgery.
- $77.00 could help transport homeless animals raising their chances of adoption.
- $103.00 could help keep an inspector on the road fighting animal cruelty.
- $350.00 could subsidise the cost of prosecuting a cruelty offender in a NSW court.
