Leigh Quade completed in the Hartley Cycle Challenge late last year, raising close to $16,000.
Now, his son James has received a Ray Harvey grant of $600 for his excellence in hockey.
He was among several local young sportspeople to be presented with the grants late last year at the Civic Centre on Bourke Street.
Leigh was extremely proud of the 13-year-old, who started playing the sport three years ago.
"As parents, you are always overly proud of your kids," Leigh said.
"We certainly are of James, as he's worked really hard over the past couple of years to achieve what he has.
"We're very happy with it overall. The grant is a welcome recognition of the hard work he has put in."
The funds have already been spent for James' time with the ACT u13s hockey team at the Nationals in Tasmania recently.
His achievements don't end there.
James has made the ACT National Indoor Hockey team and will play in the National Championships in Wollongong over January 18 to 22.
It is yet to be seen how far James wants to take hockey or whether he wants to play professionally when he grows up.
But his love for the sport in undeniable.
"He doesn't verbalise exactly what he wants to get out of it at this stage as it's not the sort of kid he is," Leigh said.
"He just absolutely loves the game. Any minute he can spend playing it, that's the enjoyment he gets out of it at this stage."
James also gives back to the sport by refereeing at State carnivals.
The Ray Harvey grants are handed out biannually.
