The Lieder's production will be an adaptation of the twentieth century classic novel, Nineteen Eighty-Four, written by George Orwell in 1948, and published in 1949 a few months before his death.
Directed by Chrisjohn Hancock, the story of big brother watching us and controlling everything in our lives is as real today as Orwell imagined it seventy years ago. Its ideas have become today's ideas and Orwell's fiction is said to be today's reality. The play tells the story of Winston Smith attempting to rebel from the oppressive and ever-seeing world of Big Brother, he starts a diary then falls in love.
But, just as he predicts, he is caught and the door to room 101 swings open. In a world where cheap entertainment keeps the proles ignorant but content, where a war without end is always fought and the government is always watching, can Winston possibly hold onto what he believes?
Newspeak, Doublethink and the Thought Police take on a chilling reality in the production that resonates today more strongly than when the novel was written over seventy years ago.
The Lieder cast features Blake Selmes as Winston Smith, supported by Ryan Paranthoiene, Courtney McKenzie, David Rayner, Ben Pik, Kathy Campbell, and new-commers to the Lieder stage, Greg Angus and Tom Chalker with a special appearance by Lilly McKellar.
With the recent acquisition of a new sound computer and software curtesy of Warehouse Circus the production team is challenging themselves to achieve a top-rate show full of special effects.
Harrison Treble stage-manages the show, with Wade Pik assisting (and wrangling the animals), Andrew Rayner operates audio visuals and sound while new-comer Garry Vehtic lights the show.
Pauline J Mullen and Helena Bozzetto have costumed the production and the set painted by Michael Byrt. Tech support has been provided by Blake Selmes, Steve Routley and Jack Bell.
The production opens on Wednesday, March 11 at 7:30pm with a fundraising event hosted by Goulburn Labor then continuing every Friday, Saturday and Wednesday until March 28. There will be one matinee on Saturday, March 21 at 2pm before the evening show.
Tickets can be purchased online at www.theliedertheatre.com or in person at Goulburn Medical Clinic, McKell Place, or at the door before each performance. For more information phone the Lieder Theatre on 4821 5066.
