Hume District Police officer Andrew Raunjak is caring for three small girls in a unit near Canberra Hospital, while his wife Jocelyn fights for her life following a diagnosis of acute promyelocytic leukaemia (APML).
Now there's another initiative to reach out and support them - and all you have to do is eat a Big Mac next Wednesday, May 6.
Who said helping people was hard?
North Goulburn McDonalds will donate $2 from every Big Mac sold at their restaurant between 5am and midnight, sending it straight to the fund set up by NSW Police Legacy.
"In reading some of the information that was circling, my family and I decided we might be able to help the Raunjak family during this challenging time," said North Goulburn McDonalds licensee Daimon Poole.
"We are a local family, we have kids at the same school and we are always looking at ways we can give back to the same community that gives to us through our McDonalds brand.
"We wanted to do something big for the Raunjak family and to showcase the great Goulburn spirit."
"With our three heads together - Maccas, Police and Mission Australia - we came up with the concept of 'Big Macs for Raunjaks', a match made in heaven," said Mr Strickland.
"As a local community service organisation that is about strengthening communities we feel its important to be involved and support a local police officer and family in need - the police do so much to protect and support us, its time to return the favour."
Inspector Hinton said that Andrew had already been "blown away" with the generosity they had been shown.
"Individuals and businesses wanting to help has brought the Raunjak's to tears," he said.
"The position Andrew is in breaks our heart. When their family should be rejoicing in the birth of their third child, they instead are fighting to keep his wife alive and treat her for a potentially deadly cancer. In the midst of a pandemic where friends and family have to socially distance and he has effectively been locked down away from home, it's just unimaginable."
McDonalds has implemented social distancing and other practices due to covid-19, so drive through and take away are the only methods to get your Big Mac on Wednesday.
