The Upper Lachlan Shire Council has confirmed it will seek community feedback after representations from several Gunning-based community groups about the golf course.
Some of the suggestions included improvements to the golf course and the club house, while others went further, such as possible ancillary areas be set aside for archery and cycling.
Following discussions with several Gunning-based community groups, Upper Lachlan Shire general manager, Colleen Worthy, said the council was impressed by the passion of the community groups and the breadth of ideas they presented.
"We were approached by people from Gunning who collectively had involvement in groups that have an interest in the use of the entire area," Ms Worthy said.
"I was impressed by the potential the area has and the ideas the community was offering."
While it is still too early for council to make any commitments one way or the other, the interest shown by the community groups has provided positive ground on which to start discussions.
"This was all very preliminary but serves as a starting point for us to commence community engagement," Ms Worthy said.
"The next step will include confirming representation from the community on the governing committee, then there will be extensive community engagement to generate and canvas ideas.
"Probably the key point to make is that we want to hear what the community wants, and ideas about making this facility a valuable and well utilised golf and recreational precinct."
Should the council decide in favour of adding formal archery and cycling areas to the golf course, it will strengthen what is already a robust sporting culture in the town.
The council confirmed it will formally engage the community and relevant shareholders shortly.
