Lennox Haronga, 19, of Darcy Crescent, was sentenced at Goulburn Local Court for two counts of driving a vehicle with an illicit drug in his system and possession of cannabis. Additional charges for the cultivation of marijuana plants and possession of the drug were adjourned to November 11, 2020.
Lennox appeared before the court on October 14. The court heard that in April 2020, Lennox was caught by police driving with cannabis in his system. He was later charged for the same offence in June 2020.
Solicitor Kel Clowry said his client had a "cannabis problem" and smoked the drug nightly. He said Lennox needed psychological support to beat this habit.
According to police facts read out to the court, Lennox "admits to destroying evidence". The court heard that he had removed cannabis plants from a hydroponic set up in a shed and "hid [the plants] in a bucket" from police.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie took Lennox's guilty plea into account but said the case was aggravated by his record of driving offences which included speeding.
"You gave no thought to the safety of anyone on the road," she said.
"You had more information the second time and yet you still did it.
"Don't you dare be so selfish and put the community at risk."
Lennox was fined $600 and disqualified from driving for three months for the first driving with an illicit drug present offence, and fined $900 and disqualified for nine months for the second offence. He was fined $300 for possession of cannabis.
More to come.
