Acting Southern Tablelands zone manager George Shepherd said the fire broke out at 6.20pm on Monday east of Marulan, about 1km along Highland Way.
Four RFS tankers from Marulan and Tallong, comprising 15 personnel, tackled the outbreak, which burnt slowly within the rail corridor. It was extinguished shortly before 8pm.
"At this stage we believe it was started by a train," Mr Shepherd said.
Train services were not greatly disrupted but drivers were asked to proceed with caution.
Mr Shepherd said while two outbreaks near Marulan were initially reported, it turned out to be just one.
Crews were also kept on the hop with a car fire on the Windellama Road, some 24km from Goulburn at 7pm Monday. Three units attended that blaze, which was believed to have been caused by an electrical fault.
Mr Shepherd said the occupant/s had safely emerged from the vehicle and the fire was soon extinguished. Police could not provide further information.
Also on Monday, an RFS crew assisted at a two-car crash on the Federal Highway at Sutton.
The collision occurred in the southbound lane near the Macs Reef Road intersection at about 5.30pm. Police, ambulance, ACT Fire and Rescue and Lake George RFS also attended the scene.
Injuries are not known at this stage.
All lanes have since been reopened and traffic was back to normal, Live Traffic NSW reported.
At 6.30pm, police, ambulance and the RFS were called to a single-vehicle crash near Crookwell.
A car was reported to have crashed into a post, 8km from the town on the Boorowa Road.
A NSW Ambulance media spokesman said the male occupant, aged 60 to 70, was taken to Goulburn Base Hospital suffering chest pain and shock.
Police expected to lay charges for driving under the influence of alcohol.
RFS attended for fire protection.
