A spokesman said the work, to be undertaken by Interflow, would entail smoke testing to ensure all connections to the council's sewer were appropriate.
"Council has experienced excessive inflow in wet periods and we need to address this as the treatment plant cannot handle the excessive hydraulic load," Manager of Water, Waste and Sewer Tom Baldwin said.
In particularly wet weather, inflow increases to eight to 10 times the normal level. There will be no interruption to services during this audit. This process has been scheduled at this time to accommodate the availability of Interflow.
The council last year reported a spill from the sewage system following heavy rain.
At the time, general manager Colleen Worthy said it was mostly stormwater but the volume had been too much for the output buffer dam to store and flowed into the creek.
The Environment Protection Authority was notified.
Meantime, work is also underway to install a new water filtration system for Taralga following a fire that destroyed the plant in early December. The council hopes to have it installed in February.
