Goulburn Mulwaree councilors unanimously voted to endorse a new Road Safety Action Plan at a meeting on April 20.

The action plan is a joint partnership between the council, Transport for NSW (TfNSW) and Roads and Maritime Services to address road safety at a local government level. The four year plan uses a 'safe system' approach to improving road safety which takes a holistic view of the road transport system. The system takes into account the road user, the roads and roadsides, the vehicle and travel speeds.
The plan was designed around crash statistics in the Goulburn region over the past five years, provided by TfNSW.
In the meeting, mayor Bob Kirk said the data - which showed that over 77 per cent of people were moderately, seriously or fatally injured in car crashes - was "pretty drastic".
The data revealed that in the Goulburn Mulwaree area 18 people had been killed in car crashes over the past five years with 594 recorded car crashes in total. According to the statistics the majority, almost 44 per cent, of crashes occurred on unclassified roads.
The action plan will prioritise the following:
- Unclassified roads
- Speed - contributed to 25 per cent of crashes
- Light Trucks - involved in 17 per cent of all crashes
- Fatigue - contributed to 15 per cent of crashes
- Motorcycles - involved in 9.3 per cent of crashes
- Cyclists - involved in three per cent of crashes
- Older road users - over-represented in crashes
The plan will also involve partnering with the Hume Police District, local schools, community clubs and organisations, Rapid Autos, Charnock Motors, the Liquor Accord, Divalls Earthmoving, Boral and others.
