In that time, the number of women playing rugby league, rugby union, hockey, and a number of other previously male-dominated sports has boomed.
This growth is set to be further supported by the state government's announcement of the fourth round of the Stronger Country Communities Fund, which is worth $100 million.
Up to half of this amount will be specifically allocated to the delivery of women's sporting facilities and programs, which Member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman said will hopefully help Goulburn and the surrounding regions continue their strong sporting traditions.
"The Goulburn electorate has a rich sporting history and I can see that participation is growing - particularly for women's sport - and this funding will help 'level the field' for the region," Mrs Tuckerman said.
"We've already seen the benefits that the Stronger Country Communities Fund has delivered to our communities, such as the Bundanoon Skate Park, Goulburn Moto Park, Murrumbateman Tennis and Crookwell's Lin Cooper Field."
Minister for Women, Bronnie Taylor, said providing facilities, particularly women's change rooms, ensures all female athletes are supported from grassroots to elite level to participate in the widest range of sports, including once male-dominated codes.
Applications for Stronger Country Communities Fund Round Four opened on May 1 and close on June 25, 2021. For more information, including program guidelines and eligibility criteria, visit: www.nsw.gov.au/SCCF.
