Fast times predicted in inaugural Goulburn Duathlon

The event will take place on July 17 from 9.30am, and will feature three distances, each with a cycle and run leg:

The Duathlon has been organised by Elite Energy, whose spokesman, Seb Gallery, said it is popular among athletes.

"Goulburn Duathlon is a thrilling event for many of our athletes," Gallery said.

"Not only is it a new event and course for our competitors to try, but it is also a qualifying event for the Multisport World Championship being held in Townsville next year."

In the unfamiliar Goulburn course, Gallery expects quick times but said there will likely be some challenges for entrants as well.

"One of the most exciting parts of the course to me is that it looks like it is a really fast and flat run course, with a few challenging sections on the bike," he said.

"The most challenging section on the cycle leg will be a 6.7 percent rise which is sure to raise athletes' heart rates before the turnaround point.

"I am expecting some really quick times from the athletes that will come in from across the state in an attempt to snag some qualifying points for the Australian Age Group team."

Each race will begin and end at Marsden Weir Park. The run element will make use of the Wollondilly River Walkway, whereas the cycling element will follow a course along Crookwell Road, then onto Chinamans Lane and Range Road towards Mummel.

Due the nature of the event, altered traffic arrangements will be in place along the course.

Entry for spectators is free, and there will be a number of vantage points where viewers can watch the races.

The Goulburn Duathlon is one of two scheduled by Elite Energy this year, with the second to take place in Canberra on October 3.
