To help make their lives a little easier, Goulburn Can Assist is offering to help pay for their CTP green slip insurance.
Goulburn Can Assist president Ian McMurdo, who received first hand help from the organisation when he was undergoing treatment, said the donations were a wonderful thing.
"Can Assist helped me with accommodation back when I was being treated for cancer, Mr McMurdo said.
"I didn't have to travel much as I stayed in Sydney.
"However, most people these days go to Canberra for treatment, so they do have to do a lot of travelling.
"That can mean a trip of up to 200km, and you might need to do 20 to 30 of those trips.
"If people can travel in their own car, they feel more independent and in control of the situation."
Can Assist Goulburn's community liaison officer Ruth Doggett was grateful for the funding received from greenslips.com.au, especially after the negative impact of COVID-19 on the charity.
"When you're in your own car you feel safe and secure and it's like your home," Ms Doggett said.
"COVID restrictions have also caused community transport to be limited, so it's even more important to have your own vehicle to access treatment.
"The branch is down around $50,000 because of the pandemic's impact on fundraising.
"We had to streamline our funds to focus mostly on medical, chemo medicine and scans expenses.
"However, the biggest cost is fuel, as patients have to travel to Canberra and Sydney.
"On average, it is $30 a day in fuel costs, which means it's $900 for a radiation round which is huge."
Established in 2010, Can Assist Goulburn provides practical and financial support to cancer patients in Goulburn and surrounding townships, through fuel vouchers, car maintenance, insurances like green slips, pharmaceuticals and utility payments.
Over the past financial year, Can Assist Goulburn has helped 120 cancer patients, providing $45,000 worth of support.
