They were one of 14 community housing providers to benefit from the state government's Community Housing Innovation Fund (CHIF).

Six units will be built near the CBD to support individuals and families who need them most.

Argyle Housing Acting ceo Carolyn Doherty said the architecturally designed two and three bedroom townhouses were specifically suited to women aged over 55 and families in need.

"These modern, safe and secure homes will boost social and affordable housing stocks within Goulburn and we are thankful to the government for making this opportunity available," Ms Doherty said.

"Property prices and rental values in Goulburn are trending upwards, with medium sales and rental prices now above the affordability of many of our tenants and people in need of housing within the Goulburn area."

Ms Doherty said eligible social housing tenants working and paying market rent in the Goulburn Mulwaree LGA would have an opportunity to move into a new townhouse under the affordable housing program with the possibility of purchasing the townhouse in the future.

"This is an exciting opportunity for key workers to have home ownership within Goulburn," she said.

There is an acknowledgment from both the state government and local council that there is a need for more social and affordable housing in the LGA due to a large number of residents on very low and low incomes and the increasing property sale and rental values.

The investment to bolster housing supply was made as part of the state's government's COVID-19 economic recovery strategy.
