The 20-year-old seventh seed is gunning for an Australian Open crown to add to her surprise French Open title, won in 2020.

Reaching the fourth round at Melbourne Park in the past two years, Swiatek looked sharp on Tuesday as she swept past British wildcard Harriet Dart 6-3 6-0.

With Agnieszka Radwanska's former coach Tomasz Wiktorowski joining her last month, Swiatek said he'd tried to simplify her game and work on her strengths.

"It's going to give me confidence," Swiatek said.

"I'm pretty happy that we are focusing on my strengths and on positive stuff.

"Last season I tend to over-analyse the situations on court.

"It's tennis, it's a game - you're just hitting the ball and you should hit it as fast as possible, not where the opponent is. Sometimes it's easier than I was thinking."

Setting up a meeting with Swede Rebecca Peterson, who overcame Australian Daria Saville 6-2 6-3, Swiatek said she was inspired by Stosur, who also had a first-round win.

Despite the 17-year age difference, she said they often practised together.

"Last practice we played a doubles game and I was pretty happy that I won against her volleys," Swiatek said.

"Sam is great. You can see that she's still having fun, which is amazing after so many years. She's really inspiring."

Swiatek was joined in the second round by some familiar faces.

World No.3 Garbine Muguruza stretched her Australian Open round-one win streak to 10 years by comfortably getting past Clara Burel on Rod Laver Arena.

The Spaniard overpowered world No.77 Burel 6-3 6-4 to underline her credentials as an Open heavyweight.

Muguruza is aiming to add to a third grand slam title to her resume by eclipsing her 2020 Australian Open performance, when she lost in the final to American Sofia Kenin.

She was a quarter-finalist in 2017 while last year she lost in three sets to eventual champion Naomi Osaka in the fourth round.

Muguruza comes into the tournament having captured the WTA Finals title in Guadalajara to end the year ranked third - her highest ranking since July 2018.

Muguruza will next face another French player in veteran Alize Cornet, who accounted for Bulgarian Viktoriya Tomova 6-3 6-3.

Estonian sixth seed Anett Kontaveit rolled doubles ace Katerina Siniakova 6-2 6-3, while former Australian Open finalist Simona Halep moved into the second round with a 6-4 6-3 win over Magdalena Frech.

Second seed Aryna Sabalenka recovered from a set and a break down to survive and deny Aussie wildcard Storm Sanders 5-7 6-3 6-2 in the late match.

But two-time Wimbledon champion and 2019 Open runner-up Petra Kvitova was a shock 6-2 6-2 loser to world No.38 Sorana Cirstea.
