A police officer has been charged with child sex offences after he was allegedly caught with child exploitation material.

The man, who held the rank of senior sergeant in Queensland's Central Region, was suspended from the police force and has resigned.
He is charged with three counts of using a carriage service to access child exploitation material and one count of possessing the material.
Child exploitation material is defined as "nude or sexual images or videos of children under 16" by the Australian Federal Police.
Queensland Police said these offences were allegedly committed outside of work hours.
