The home at 6 Auburn St, built for the well-known Wheatley family in 1912, sold at auction amid spirited bidding on Saturday for $615,000.
Agent, Tronn Alstergren of Platt-Hepworth and Associates, said the price was the third highest ever for a house sold in Goulburn. Last year the agents were associated with the sale of a local home for $617,000.
"It does put a mark there (in terms of the local real estate market). People recognised that this was a home of real quality and you can't buy anything like it these days. To build something similar would cost in the order of $1.5 million," Mr Alstergren said.
Some 140 people attended the on-site auction and there were nine registered bidders from Goulburn, the Southern Highlands and Sydney. Ninety inspections were arranged during the eight weeks the property was on the market and 30-40 contracts were given out.
"The house sold well above the reserve and the (former) owners were very happy with the result," Mr Alstergren said.
The losing bidder was from Goulburn.
Mr Alstergren said the new owners intended to fully restore the home that was still very much a reflection of its era, with maids' quarters at the rear and a separate servants' entrance.
The house had not been upgraded since its construction.
