Mr Steyns, who has been in the post since the school's amalgamation eight years ago, announced the move in a staff meeting last week and to parents of boarders in a newsletter.
It will become effective on January 26 next year.
His resignation comes at the same time Trinity is struggling to keep its boarding school open, following pressure from the Catholic Education Office (CEO) to reach a 70-student target by the start of 2009.
