That’s because the average life expectancy of someone with CF is only 37 years, and today’s 65 Roses Day campaign is one of the only avenues of hope for a brighter future.
Members of the Goulburn Cystic Fibrosis Group will be out and about selling merchandise for the campaign outside Kmart in Centro Goulburn all day, raising awareness and much-needed funds for children throughout Australia who have CF, and to continue important research into the condition.
Cystic Fibrosis Australia CEO Terry Stewart said the funds would further research into the incurable disease.
“Five million dollars has been raised (through 65 Roses Day) over the last 12 years. During this time, the average life expectancy of a person with CF has increased by 10 years. This is a huge achievement and we’re looking forward to doing even more with this year’s campaign,” Mr Stewart said. “In the 1980s, the average life expectancy (for CF sufferers) was 17. Due to improved research, today it’s 37, but it’s still just 37,” he said.
“65 Roses Day and www.65rosesday.org.au are opportunities for us to involve as many people as possible in raising funds that can help change lives. A small contribution from a large number of people goes a very long way, and makes a big difference to the thousands of people living with CF.”
Cystic Fibrosis is the most common life-threatening, recessive genetic condition affecting Australian children today, and primarily affects the lungs and digestive system. Approximately one in every 2500 babies will be born with the condition.
Proceeds from 65 Roses Day will go to the Goulburn CF Group to support and assist sufferers of the disease in Goulburn and surrounding areas, to help them maintain their health and quality of life.
This year is a particularly special year for the Goulburn and District CF Group, as it marks the 40th Anniversary of the group’s inception. Founder Julia Laybutt first launched the group in June 1971, and it has been going strong ever since, thanks to a team of dedicated volunteers.
All money raised by the group helps local families who have children suffering from Cystic Fibrosis by supplying them with medical equipment, medication and assisting with hospital expenses. Being a volunteer driven organisation, the Goulburn CF Group welcomes anyone interested in joining our group.
