Christopher Hugh Chandler, 39, his girlfriend and another woman were drinking at the Workers Club on the evening of July 29, with Mr Chandler returning home before his girlfriend, who stayed out longer socialising with her friend.
When the victim returned home, the accused - who was on parole for a previous assault charge - became violent, and subjected his partner to a sustained beating over several hours. Magistrate Beattie held up pictures taken of the battered victim to show Mr Chandler, who appeared in court via audio-visual link from Goulburn Jail.
“Can you see this? How could you possibly do that to her?” the magistrate asked.
“This wasn’t a one-off assault in the course of an argument, but ongoing abuse over a number of hours. That borders on torture.”
“The facts of this case are amongst the most shameful I’ve ever read.
“Domestic violence is a matter of great concern to the community, because it’s all too easily covered up.”
Magistrate Beattie sentenced the accused to two years’ imprisonment. The victim was treated at Goulburn Base Hospital for two black eyes, large facial bruises, and large bruises to the back of the head, right shoulder and neck.
Child porn charges
In other unrelated court news, a man is facing child pornography charges after police seized a number of hard drives, memory cards, DVDs and laptop computers from his Moss Vale home on Tuesday.
Michael John Diamond, 55, is facing two counts of possessing child abuse material and one count of using a carriage service to transmit, publish or promote child pornography.
He was refused bail and appeared in Goulburn Local Court on Wednesday via audio-visual link. The matter was adjourned until September 14 for reply.
