It is almost always an unfamiliar bridge connecting saturated childhood memories and the starker, grainier responsibilities of adulthood.
The act of crossing this bridge is adolescence, and ARTEXPRESS is its canvas.
Until September, the artworks of 30 HSC students from across the state will hug the walls of the Regional Art Gallery as a part of the exhibition ARTEXPRESS.
Nine galleries in the state will exhibit this collection.
In Goulburn, Education Officer Sally O’Neill chose the final few from 500 works in Sydney last year. Negotiating with other galleries, she picked works she believed would be well received for the region.
One painting, a 54-piece panel called ‘Power to the Grid: Lake George’ by Phoebe Martin from Monaro stitches together a powerful Lake George.
It is a very familiar scene.
Rolling hills and clouds, colours so fleeting it appears to be fake and in the distance, wind turbines, scattered just beyond eyesight.
Ms O’Neill had to negotiate with two other galleries to successfully include it in Goulburn’s collection, an addition she described was very important.
“I chose the works with the audience in mind. Our exhibition reflects our audience. We have a good idea what people are interested in” she said.
“It’s such an important piece for Goulburn people and people in this area.”
Others include ‘Girl Factory’, a series of photographs which explores femininity through a porcelain lens. ‘Dearest Patsy', a delicate collation of fabric and threads, which illustrate the enduring love between grandparents and a large, poignant etching labelled ‘And you call us lazy’ voices the influences of outside factors and its effect on oneself.
Ms O’Neill stressed this was also an inspiration for other students who plan to have works in the exhibition next year, and any other young person who plans to pursue art.
There is no one uniform exhibition, with each varying depending on the gallery. ARTEXPRESS will run until September 2.
