Written by Kate Mulvany and based on the children’s book by Kit Williams, Maquerade is directed by Chrisjohn Hancock with musical direction by Marianne Powles.
The story centres on bumbling Jack Hare, who is on a race against time to deliver a message of love from the Moon to the Sun.
Far, far away in a world just like ours, a mother uses the take of Jack Hare’s Adventures to cheer up her son Joe, who is in hospital and very ill.
But when Jack Hare’s mission goes topsy-turvy, Joe and his mum must come to the rescue.
The all-local cast displays a multitude of talent, playing musical instruments as well as creating a world of magical characters to tell a story of love using songs, riddles and hidden treasures.
The Lieder cast features the talents of Wade Pik and Erin Williams as the young boy and his mum, wonderfully supported by Blake Selmes as Jack Hare.
Other multi-talented performers appearing include: Marianne Powles, Amelia Whalley-Routley, Anne Waterston, Ethan Betts, Steve Routley, and Andy Picker.
Lieder artistic director Chisjohn Hancock said it is a show not to be missed.
“Masquerade, the finely illustrated picture book and near-impossible treasure hunt created by Kit Williams in 1979 was the inspiration for Australian playwright and successful actor Kate Mulvany to mould an imaginative and wondrous tale of love that will sing in audience’s memories long after the show is over,” Mr Hancock said.
“This is a not-to-be-missed theatre event at the Lieder and an excellent season opener for 2018.”
Music for the play has been written is by Mikelangelo and Pip Branson and an amulet, modelled on the original gold amulet, has been created by local jeweller Bill Dorman.
