“After the weather report regarding damaging winds this morning, we determined it is best to implement the total fire ban tomorrow and suspend all permits,” operations officer at the Yass Fire Control Centre, Lachlan Gilchrist said.
“At the moment the wind speeds are forecast to be up to 30-40 km/h which, under normal conditions, wouldn’t seem that extreme, but given the ongoing dryness, it’s been determined to present a significant risk.”

He said areas like Windellama, Bungonia and Oallen were the most prone.
“Those areas have had very low rainfall,” Mr Gilchrist said.
“The paddocks there are also very dry, so it is fair to say those areas are more volatile than others.”
Inspector Ian Kennerley said leaving early was always the safest option.
“If a fire breaks out in these conditions, you should only stay with your home if it’s well-prepared and you are able to actively defend it,” he said.
“Only well prepared homes that are actively defended can provide safety if a fire was to threaten.”
