'Let the Ladies Go', a non-profit charity that aims to save the chickens from slaughter, will be organising 'Rescued Chicken Adoption Day' this Saturday in Mittagong.
The charity, which is in Mandalong, aims to re-home rescued chickens and provide them a retirement from a life of continuous egg laying.
Organiser Tanya Daykin has been the driving force behind the adoption of thousands of rescued chickens over the past two years.
"I used to walk past an egg farm on my way to work when I decided to do something about it and came up with the idea to rehabilitate and re-home rescued chickens," she said.
"Let the Ladies Go' started organising these events in different locations across NSW in order to create awareness about the conditions of these chickens.
"In the past two years, we have re-homed around 33,000 chickens."
The chickens up for adoption are 18 months old. At this age, they are usually headed to be slaughtered.
"They are ready to be slaughtered and fertilised. That's when we step in, buy the flock, move them to rehab facility, [then] they are adopted as pets," she said.
They also have a system in place to ensure these chickens don't fall into the hands of breeders and dealers posing as people who would like to adopt.
"We have a very good system in place to ensure that does not happen and these chickens get a loving home," Miss Daykin said.
The event is being held in Mittagong for the first time and the adoption is free.
The event is being held on Saturday, July 13 at 12pm. Entry to the event is by invitation only. Call Miss Daykin on 0415 258 915 for vetting.
The location of the event is disclosed to only those on the list and details are shared shortly before the event.
