The state government recently offered the Goulburn Mulwaree Council $100,000 for Bushfire Community Resilience and Economic Recovery. Councillors unanimously voted to spend the majority of the money in Tallong at a meeting on Tuesday, February 3.
The council said it was their opinion that Tallong was the most affected area of the region as the community was evacuated at least three times during the fire emergency.
Council representatives met with the Tallong Progress Association and discussed options and opportunities for the use of the funds.
A portion of the funds, $40,000 will go towards the centenary of the Tallong Hall this year. The anniversary will be combined with an event to thank the local Rural Fire Service Brigades and community for their assistance during the bushfire crisis. The event will include a community photo similar to a photo that was taken 100 years ago. Lunch will be provided with community support for the affected properties in the Tallong region.
$40,000 will also be allocated to expand the sculpture garden behind Tallong Hall. The council reserve land currently contains a garden and walkway. $19,000 worth of iron sculptures have already been ordered prior to the grant. The additional money will be used to further develop the garden with plantings, seating, and improvements to the walkway and small bridges.
The remaining $20,000 will be used to deliver Business Recovery Workshops. The workshops will focus on what people can do to protect and generate growth opportunities for the future of their business.
