The Goulburn Mulwaree Council received a $377,000 grant through the Federal Government's Community Sport Infrastructure Program. This money fully funded four km of the walkway, beginning at Marsden Weir and going right around stage two of the walkway to Tarlo Street.
The council chose to fund another two km of solar lighting within Riverside Park, with intentions to add a further 1.5km in future years to complete the area.
Mayor Bob Kirk said Solar LED lighting allowed the community to utilise these recreation spaces for longer periods and at different times.
"We can see the value of the solar lighting especially during our winter, where many people don't finish work until dusk. The lights mean they can still get changed and throw a beanie on to go for that walk in what is a safe, well lit environment," he said.
"The river walkways have been such an important project for this region, especially during the recent lockdown periods due to COVID-19. It is a project we as a council and community are incredibly proud of."
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the walkway was now safer and more accessible for all to enjoy.
"I'm thrilled that the installation of solar lighting will extend the hours of use of the walkway," he said.
"The walkway has become a well used community asset in Goulburn, particularly over the last few months and I'm looking forward to the completion of the next stage."
Leadsun were the successful tenders for the project, they installed smart solar lighting as a set and forget solution. They will provide ambient lighting that is intensified when pedestrian movement is detected.
