The demolition of the existing indoor pool hall began in July, three months ahead of schedule, and is expected to be completed by early September, when earthworks for the new hall will begin. Mayor Bob Kirk and member for Goulburn Wendy Tuckerman turned the first sod on Friday, August 14, officially opening the construction phase.
Council has budgeted nearly $30 million for Stage 1 of the redevelopment, of which the NSW government provided $10 million. Ms Tuckerman said she expected the pool to be one of the leading sport and recreation facilities in southern NSW.
The new facility will boast an eight-lane indoor pool, a warm water pool, new change rooms, a café, and a gymnasium, while the existing 25 m indoor pool will be converted to a program pool.
During construction, swimmers will be able to use the outdoor 50 metre pool, which Council expects to be open from September.
A temporary water service has been completed for this pool. Lights around the pool will be upgraded by the end of this month. During excavation, builders removed asbestos pipework, and relocated the internet connection.
