Yousef Alilo, 34, of Fairfield, appeared before Goulburn Local Court on March 10. Alilo pleaded guilty, via an Arabic interpreter, to speeding more than 20km/h above the legal limit.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie said Alilo was accused of travelling at 138km/h on the highway near Marulan on December 28, 2020.
Alilo, who represented himself, said he "put the cruise control on but ... did not realise the speed [he] was doing until the police stopped [him]."
"I was surprised the police stopped me because I follow the rules," he said.
"At the time of double demerits why would I speed?"
Magistrate Beattie took Alilo's guilty plea into account.
"The speed limit is 110km/h, it is a limit not a guide," she said.
"If something had gone wrong ... by the time your brain realised that and got your body to react, your vehicle would have gone a lot further than if it was going 110km/h".
Alilo was convicted and fined $400.
