Shortly after the Bulldogs women put on good displays against the visiting Mittagong Lions, with one win and one loss, the men's sides took to the field and showed their mettle on March 13.
The Under 19s were first to get things underway, in which Goulburn scored an 8-8 draw. They were followed by the Reserve Grade clash, which saw the Bulldogs claim a narrow four-point win.
It was in First Grade, however, that the Bulldogs pulled out all the stops. After overcoming some initial rust, and conceding an early try, Goulburn roared back to hammer Mittagong 40-12.
"I think they had a fair few bodies backing up, but I was still happy with the way the boys played," Bulldogs co-coach Tyson Greenwood said.
"Being our first hit-out in a while, we still have a few things to knuckle down on and get crisp, but apart from that, overall performance was good.
"All the boys I gave a job did what they had to do, and I was pretty happy with the performance."
For many of the players, it was their first run in more than 18 months. Yet they handily overcame the Lions, who had already played a trial match just the week prior.
The strength of Goulburn's performance was assuring to Greenwood, who said he is close to settling on a lineup for the season.
"There's always going to be opportunities for boys to come in and out pending injuries and player performance," he said.
"But from the weekend, one good thing that Jesse [Martin, Greenwood's co-coach] and I took out of it was that the boys we had in positions are definitely players we can rely on and are looking like holding a consistent position in the side."
The positive signs were not only apparent for the First Grade side, either.
Across all grades, Goulburn scored three wins, one loss, and a draw, which Greenwood said buoyed the confidence of the players ahead of their last trial matches against Picton this coming Saturday.
Unlike the matches against the Lions, this weekend's trials will only feature First Grade, Reserve Grade, and League Tag.
"That'll be our final trial, so we'll be looking to walk away from that with confidence in our own performance, but confidence as a team and a club too," Greenwood said.
"They're another Group Six side, so we'll put it to them and take our best foot forward and see how we go."
As Greenwood has not played against Picton during his career and has not seen them play for a number of years, he does not know what to expect on the field.
However, given their status as a Group Six club, he said they will probably be "tough" opponents.
"This is their second trial too, so they'll have found their feet and have a bit more confidence in their combinations.
"We'll play our footy, get over the top of them, win the fight in the forward pack and let our backs do the work just like we did last weekend."
Goulburn will play the Picton Magpies in Picton on March 27. Further details about the matches will be announced on the club's Facebook page.
