Troy Cameron, 48, of Market Street, Goulburn, appeared before Goulburn Local Court from custody on April 28. Cameron pleaded guilty to breaking and entering a house to steal.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie told the court that on November 10, 2020 Cameron broke into a home in Goulburn. She said he gained entry through the rear laundry door before stealing a laptop, purse, camera, alcohol, money, nappies and other items.
Magistrate Beattie said two females had shown Cameron the premises and directed him to steal, saying he owed them money. She told the court that before the incident the women had broken into Cameron's room, stolen from him, and told him they would return his possessions after the theft.
"It's absolutely no excuse to do that, you turned around and committed the same offence on somebody else," she said.
"It's a big invasion of somebody's space."
Solicitor Tracey Annan said her client was at risk, if he wasn't already, of becoming institutionalised.
She said before the offence Cameron had applied to start his own business through Centrelink. She said he could craft resin statues and coffee tables.
The solicitor said Cameron had a traumatic childhood where he suffered abuse. Ms Annan told the court that Cameron was diagnosed with ADHD as a child and had a personality disorder. She said he struggled with drug and alcohol addiction, and had periods of homelessness.
She said Cameron had expressed that "being in Goulburn with the negative peers he has connected with is not good for him".
The solicitor presented to the court that Cameron "admitted he had tunnel vision when committing the offence".
Cameron was sentenced to 24-months full-time imprisonment with a non -parole period of 15-months.
