Bradley James David Moon, 25, faced Goulburn Local Court on April 28 after pleading guilty to stealing property as a clerk or servant.
Magistrate Geraldine Beattie told the court that between August 1 and 22, 2020, Moon stole $6000 from his employer, a licensed premises, in Goulburn.
She said Moon was a "very trusted employee at the hotel" and had worked there since 2016. She told the court he was responsible for receiving, locking up and counting money at the end of the night.
"You abused that trust by pocketing some of the money," Magistrate Beattie said.
"That is the money they need to operate the business, to pay employees, and cover overheads.
"You don't rip your employer off."
The magistrate told the court Moon had repaid $1285 to the manager of the hotel to "avoid prosecution".
Solicitor Lloyd argued in defense of his client. He said Moon had shown "a significant amount of remorse" and was "a person otherwise of good character".
"It was a simple audit of machines which lead to discovery."
He told the court that Moon had a history of depression but since the offence had "taken it upon himself to seek counselling for his general well being".
Mr Lloyd said his client was currently unemployed but sought to join the navy.
Moon was sentenced to a 14-month Intensive Corrections Order, 200 hours community service and ordered to repay the money.
