A COVID-19 craft surge has led to an increased interest in ceramic courses at TAFE NSW.
Reports of overwhelming demand at pottery studios, waiting lists and low stock levels point to the fact that pottery is experiencing a global revival partly caused by COVID-19, seeing many people return to craft-making to pass time.
Moss Vale local Michelle Bulloch had a burgeoning interest in ceramics and was seeking to learn more about the craft and acquire new skills.
"I was looking to learn more about ceramics and was living in Kogarah at the time. While searching for classes I discovered that TAFE NSW Gymea had a range of courses available with flexible study options so I could learn whilst working full time," she said.
"I've learned so many great skills and have developed a real passion for ceramics that has led me to pursue a career in ceramics part-time, with the desire to one day make it my full time profession."
"Ceramics requires students to set aside ample time and follow specific techniques to create their works. It's a tactile and soothing experience in an increasingly digital world which I think is one of the reasons it's experiencing such increased popularity," Leanne said.
"The Diploma of Ceramics allows students to gain the skills to work in their own practice or in organisations that design and produce ceramic objects, such as specialist tile manufacturers or makers of landscape and gardening items."
Michelle Bulloch has now completed the Diploma and Advanced Diploma at TAFE NSW Gymea and is a Finalists in the National Emerging Art Prize.
