Our wonderful council is going to make a decision soon, according to reports, regarding selling the Bourke Street council depot to pay for their office block in Hetherington Street. There are now two older groups of citizens, who are presumably ratepayers, making use of the facilities and loving it: U3A (University of the Third Age) and Goulburn Gem Club. There are several more who would appreciate using the rest of the building. Plenty of parking, very little walking for people not so mobile.

It has been published in council reports that there is $4,000,000 of ratepayers’ money that they want to spend on the Crazy Clints building in Auburn Street. How many ratepayers will this benefit? The money wasted on the undesirable piece of steel spoiling our gem of Goulburn in front of Belmore Park could have been used as part-payment on Crazy Clints. Why can’t this money be used to pay some of the cost of your office block in Hetherington Street? There always seems to be funds available to be spent on monstrosities around our city. Use some of this money. Just because someone thinks that would be a good idea, up they go!
People are always saying Goulburn is full of history. Why not use it? Plenty of other cities do and they are proud of it. There seems to be a new piece of something appearing every month. What about giving us something we can be proud of and is something other cities do.
Councillors, you were elected to represent citizens of Goulburn. Now do so, for a change, for goodness sake, for once. Don’t sell off the council depot in Bourke Street till some serious consideration goes into who would appreciate and benefit most from using it. PS. I have nothing to do with either U3A or the Gem Club.
